Anatomy in Art: Manga Anatomy versus Real Life

Image
Now that I've managed to improve my character art by at least 200%, it's time to draw something fun. Our subject above is drawn in the typical manga style, manga referring to Asian graphic art novels (those things we call comic books in America). Our bikini darling above would fall into the Shojo category, a style aimed mainly at young girls. This style almost always has a young female lead, and while they tend to be stories centered around romance and interpersonal relationships, they are not without action and adventure. Note the strong, confident pose and the happy, outgoing smile of the female lead. She is identifiable, amiable, and easily emulated. She is also drawn with slightly more heroic proportions. Kawaii! colored pencil, marker, and watercolor. #sketchbook #drawing #watercolor #manga #fantasy #art #penandink

Smoky Mountain Wildfire Tribute - Silent Vigil

Image
Deep in the moonlit wood, a black bear comes upon a lone, snow-dusted hemlock aglow with the light of dozens of fireflies. Birds gather in the branches like flashy ornaments, their song proclaiming joyously, "It's Christmas in the Smokies..." To those who lost everything during the Gatlinburg and Wear's Valley fires, we're still with you. This is our home, the beautiful place we love so much, and we will never leave it. Outsiders could never understand the connection we feel to this place - it will forever reside in our hearts and in our memories. Please feel free to download, save, and reshare. This one's on me. #christmasart #christmasdrawing #christmas2016 #digitalpainting #Gatlinburg #christmascard #christmaswallpaper

Sketchbook - Portrait Experiment No. 01

Image
It's almost September, and it's back to the good old sketchbook. I'm trying to get in some practice on my portrait expressions, so I've been playing around with anime, trying to convey difficult expressions like anticipation, inquisitiveness, and paranoia. Here we have a young girl who seems to be hanging on your every word. One might imagine she had just asked some life-altering question and is anxiously awaiting your reply.  She almost seems to be pleading, wanting something from you. #sketching #pencildrawing #portraitdrawing
