A musician (center) converses with two dancers, one with an umbrella and the other with hat and fan. Geisha were not courtesans (a nice way of saying prostitutes). They were entertainers for the wealthy elite who were masters of social etiquette. They sang, danced, played instruments, and could be hired to amuse and entertain guests at parties. A geisha was meant to represent the very essence of Japanese femininity - beautiful, graceful, delicate, and serene. Sort of like these cranes...
