Halloween Surrealism - In Mortem Speramus

"In Mortem Speramus", translated, "In Death We Trust".
Pen and Ink on 10 lb. cold pressed paper.

This is the first in a series of symbolic designs. The theme is the mysteries of death. The crow has long been considered a spirit messenger, and the symbols he carries help him with his task; the scythe for reaping souls, the lantern to guide the newly departed, keys to open the gate to the underworld, and a coffin adorned with a mandala constructed from two symbols of rebirth. He emerges from the misty veil in the cloak of death and calls to lost souls to join him.
